How to Choose the Right Tumbling Mat

Athletes and gymnasts alike require tumbling mats to absorb the impact of strenuous exercise. While it is true that good skills go a long way in minimizing the risk of dangers, it is just as important to use the right tumbling mat that fits all their requirements and specifications. This blog will discuss how the average person who is new to the idea of tumbling mats can go about selecting one.

Dimensions

Size

Mats are usually 2 feet by 4 feet, but they come in different sizes and weights. Mats used by professional gymnasts are 3 ½ feet by 3 ½ feet.  Those designed for tumbling purposes are 7 feet by 3 ½ feet long.

Structure

Gymnast and tumbling mats are similar in their structure. They are manufactured with rubber shell or PVC to coat the filling which is bonded.  More professional gymnasts use built-in sprung mats, which are composed of several layers of carpet and foam in order to give users a higher rebound.

Thickness

The thickness of foam mats ranges from one inch to three inches. The size of tumbling tracks depends on different manufacturers. It goes without saying that tumbling mats should have the right amount of thickness; otherwise; they won’t provide the necessary cushioning to protect a person while they practice on it.

If the mat is too thick, a gymnast may not be able to practice because their hands and feet will sink right into the mat when they shouldn’t.

Types of Mats

For home use, there are several types of mats to choose from. Some of the more popular designs are described below.

Paneled Mats

These mats are popular in both gyms and homes. What makes paneled mats useful is how easy they are to fold up for storage. They come in several sizes, but the most popular size is 4 feet by 8 feet. This mat will usually have a Velcro attached on all ends to allow connection with additional mats.  

Cartwheel Beam mat

These mats are great for home use, especially when the person using them is a beginner. Cartwheel beam mats are created with proper hand and feet placements to allow beginners to get their first cartwheel right. This mat can also serve other purposes such as practicing handstands and handstand rolls.

Some cartwheel beams come with a beam option. This allows users to flip the mat over for gymnasts to find a practice beam. This can be used by gymnasts to practice skills such as beam balancing that normally require the use of beams.

Flexi Roll Mats

Flexi roll mats are competitively designed but are not created with springs. They are a good option for users who want to feel competitive at home. A standing feature about flexi roll mats is that since they are carpeted, they can be rolled up for easy storage

Incline Mats

Incline mats are perfect for younger gymnasts who are still learning the ropes of the sport. They can practice rolling backward or forward without fear of injury. The incline mats can be used for log rolls as well. Beginners can use the mats to learn important skills such as body awareness to lessen the strain on their body while they practice increasingly difficult moves.

Incline mats are perfect for home use, but if the intent is to practice difficult moves, it is a good idea to select a larger sized incline mat.

Jack and Jill Mats

These mats are designed for extremely small children who are learning new skills. They are narrower than other mats, making it easier to carry them around and practice on them. Jack and Jill mats are also ideal for people interested in softer tumbling mats.

Handstand Homework

These mats are designed specifically for practicing handstands at home. If they are used according to the guidelines in their instruction manual, an athlete can significantly improve their handstand skills and proceed to more difficult gymnast routines such as beams, bars, and vaults.

These also remove the need for stacking gym mats that are normally used to make stations or barriers for different class levels.
